How to permanently disable Windows updates?

There is a fast way to disable Windows updates for selected number of days - but only up to 35 days. You can do it from the settings.

1. Open Settings.
2. Click Update & Security.
3. Click Windows Update.
4. Click Advanced options.
5. Navigate to Pause updates and under Pause until select a date.

In case your sytem allows quality updates, you can select the number of days that you want to pass before the next quality update under A quality update includes security improvements. It can be deferred for this many days.

You can disable Windows updates through Registry, which will permanently disable updates.

1. Type regedit to the Windows search and press enter to open Registry.
2. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.
3. Click on Windows folder with right mouse button.
4. Select New.
5. Select Key.
6. Enter the key name WindowsUpdate and press enter.
7. Click on the newly created WindowsUpdate key with right mouse button.
8. Select New.
9. Select Key.
10. Enter the key name AU and press enter.
11. Click on the newly created AU key with right mouse button.
12. Select New.
13. Select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
14. Enter the key name NoAutoUpdate and press enter.
15. Double-click on created NoAutoUpdate key and set value data to 1.
16. Click OK.
17. Reboot the machine.

Additionally, if this doesn't work as you expect it, you can add additional key aside NoAutoUpdate.

1. Click on the created AU key with right mouse button.
2. Select New.
3. Select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. Enter the key name AUOptions and press enter.
5. Double-click on created AUOptions key and set value data to 2.
6. Click OK.
7. Reboot the machine.

Instead of 2, you can also use some other setting that suits you better.

• 2: Get notified for download and auto install.
• 3: Auto download and notify for install.
• 4: Auto download and schedule the install.
• 5: Allow local admin to choose settings.

To revert the changes, just click on the newly created keys with your right mouse button and select Delete. Then reboot the machine again.
